Much of what we know about blood transfusions in today's medicine came from wars the U.S. took part in over the last century.

“The armed forces really was the driver for the explosion of transfusion medicine after World War II. A lot of time wars produce a lot of innovation and one of the innovations out of World War II was really scaling up blood transfusion,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of Our Blood Institute.
